Nouns can be divided into two groups—common nouns and proper nouns. The word state is a common noun. It is the general name for many places. The word Texas is a proper noun. It is the name of a particular state in the United States. A proper noun begins with a capital letter. When a proper noun is made up of two or more words, such as the title of a book, only the impor­tant words begin with capital letters.

A collective noun is the general name of a group of persons, animals, or things. The collective noun com­mittee names a group of people. Herd and fleet are col­lective nouns that refer to animals and things.
