EXAMPLE OF PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES AS ADVERBS:
A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb is an adverb phrase.
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. When prepositional phrases modify these parts of speech, they are called adverb phrases. Like adverbs, adverb phrases answer questions about the words they modify: How? When? Where? How often? To what extent?
In the examples adverb phrases are in parentheses. The words they modify are in italics.
Leave your book (on the desk). MODIFIES VERB
We are already hungry (for dinner), MODIFIES ADJECTIVE
Does Jill swim late (at night)? MODIFIES ADVERB
Like adverbs, adverb phrases can appear at different locations in sentences. They can be separated from the words they modify.
(In the morning) the three hikers left.
We will discuss that story (before noon).
Sometimes a sentence contains both an adverb phrase and an adjective phrase.
I sprained my anlde (on the first day) (of my vacation)
adverb adjective
Preposition or Adverb? Some words can be either adverbs or prepositions, depending on their use in sentences. Adverbs never have objects.
Preposition: The dogs are running around the fence.
Adverb: The dogs are running around.
